Medigap (Medicare Supplement)
Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is designed to assist in filling in the "gaps" from Original Medicare. Medigap plans are provided/sold by private insurance companies and these plans will pay costs that may be remaining after Original Medicare has paid. These remaining costs could be Co-payments, Co-insurance, or deductibles. In order to qualify for a Medigap or Medicare Supplement plan, the insured must have Medicare Part A and Part B. Alternatively, these plans do not provide any prescription drug coverage, so Part D coverage or a stand alone Prescription drug plan (PDP) is needed as well. A separate premium is owed to the private insurance company who provides your Medigap/Medicare Supplement plan, this is in addition to and has no ties to the Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
